Quick Start Guide and FAQs

What are the System Requirements for MicDrop?

MicDrop is designed to run efficiently on modern hardware. Below is a quick breakdown:

MacOS

  • Operating System: macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later
  • Processor: Apple Silicon (M1 or newer)
  • DAW: Must be running in Native Silicon, not Rosetta.

Windows

  • Operating System: Windows 10 (64-bit)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5 or equivalent AMD processor
  • Graphics: DirectX 12-compatible dedicated GPU (NVIDIA 1050 Ti minimum)
  • Audio Interface: ASIO-compatible hardware

Additional Requirements (All Platforms):

  • Memory: 8 GB RAM (16 GB recommended)
  • Storage: 2 GB of available space
  • Screen Resolution: 1280×800 minimum
  • MIDI Interface: Required only for MIDI-specific features
  • DAW: All Major DAWs are supported (i.e. top 10)
  • Internet: Broadband connection for activation and updates

Why isn’t MicDrop showing up in my DAW?

If you’re having trouble finding MicDrop among your plugins, try these steps:

  1. 1. Check Installation Folders:

    MacOS
    Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/MicDrop.vst3
    Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/MicDrop.au
    Library/Application Support/Avid/Audio/Plug-Ins/MicDrop.aax

    Windows
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\MicDrop.vst3
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Avid\Audio\Plug-Ins\MicDrop.aax

  2. 2. Rescan Plugins in Your DAW: Some DAWs require a manual rescan or refresh to detect new installations.

  3. 3. Confirm System Compatibility: Make sure your OS and hardware meet the minimum requirements listed above. If you're on Mac, please make sure your DAW is running Native Silicon, not in Rosetta. If you're on Windows, please confirm that you have a dedicated GPU (i.e. for low-moderate gaming).

Help! MicDrop isn't working! I don't hear anything!

Please remain calm and go step by step. We'll get it working- if you've already checked system compatibility and know your hardware is compatible but don't hear anything there are a few common causes:

  • 1. No input: MicDrop is designed to transform one input voice or instrument to another voice or instrument. Make sure you have audio running into the plugin. You should see it moving on the waveform. The easiest thing to do is to drop a vocal onto the right track in the DAW.

  • 2. Log into your account and download models: You have to log into your account. If your vocal models ever appear black-and-white, you're either not logged in or need to download the model. Use the account button in the top right to log in. Hit the library button (square grid button in the bottom of the portrait) to view the library and download models.

  • 3. Give it time: When MicDrop is first initializing at startup and when switching singers, it needs time to initialize and get up to speed. You should see a red dot which turns yellow and then disappears. When it's red/yellow it's in the process of setting up and needs time. If it stays red/yellow then your system can't keep up. Try reducing background tasks or instances of the plugin.

My vocals sound slightly raspy or distorted—what can I do?

MicDrop models have been painstakingly crafted to sound clean enough for professional level recordings when tuned and used properly. Yes, it's magic but it does still have a learning curve. If your output sounds “raspy” or overly distorted, consider the following:

  • 1. Start With a Clean Recording: Disable all reverb, delay, and other wet effects on the track.

  • 2. Adjust Input Levels: Ensure the incoming signal is strong (but not clipping). Quiet signals can introduce a raspy sound.

  • 3. Set Gate Parameters Carefully: A gate that’s too aggressive can chop words and create artifacts. Adjust attack/release to suit your track.

  • 4. Try a Different Vocal Model: Different voice models have “sweet spots.” Choosing one closer to your vocal range can help.

What if my system only partially meets the requirements?

MicDrop uses state-of-the-art AI algorithms to enable real-time vocal transformation within the DAW, locally, without needing to process on a server or use credits, etc. These methods are CPU/GPU intensive, and push the limits of what is possible on mid to high level machines. That being said, they can easily run on machines over five years old, for instance mid or even low-tier gaming computers. Note that unlike many traditional plugins, you won't be able to run a high number of MicDrop instances concurrently. It's more like running a game or video than an old style plugin, in terms of how much it taxes the system. This is cutting-edge software which may require altered workflows- for instance printing or freezing vocal tracks when many AI singers are required.

  • Performance May Vary: If you’re close to the minimum specs, MicDrop might still run, but you could encounter stability issues.

  • Test with a Demo: We recommend trying our free demo before committing to a purchase.

  • Consider Upgrades: Upgrading crucial components (like RAM or CPU) can significantly improve performance. If you're considering an new system, as of early 2025 the base MacMini or 1080p Windows gaming computer can easily run MicDrop.

Additional Troubleshooting Steps

Sometimes, we may need to take a deeper look:

  • Check Log Files:
    • macOS: Use the “Show Log Files” option in MicDrop or open the System Console.
    • Windows: Access the Event Viewer (Custom Views → Administrative Events) to search for errors.

  • Plugin Validation: If MicDrop fails AU, AAX, or VST3 validation, confirm your DAW is fully updated and that your OS meets requirements.
